Chapter 1
Starting with TransAT
1.1 Turbulent Channel Flow
1.1.1 Prerequisites
• TransAT
• TransATUI
• Paraview (or Tecplot)
1.1.2 Problem Description
Single-phase flow with heat transfer through a channel is studied. The walls of the channel are
kept at a constant temperature of 320 K. Air flows in through an inlet at a velocity of 3 m/s
and an initial temperature of 300 K. The aim is to get a steady-state solution of the temperature
profile in the channel. Since the flow is in the turbulent regime, k- turbulence model is used.
1.1.3 Problem Setup
The problem is setup in 2D.
• Domain: 1 m × 10 cm resolved by a mesh of 40 × 20 × 1 cells.
• Left: inflow: velocity 3.0 m/s, constant velocity inflow, temperature T in = 300 K.
• Right: outflow (velocity extrapolation)
• Y faces: no–slip walls, temperature T w = 320 K.
• Z faces: symmetry boundaries.
